A garden mistake I see all the time…
beautiful containers planted with no drainage or poor structure underneath.
Today I turned an old ceramic sink into a small alpine-style planter.![]()
But the planting is actually the last step.![]()
The important bit is what goes underneath:![]()
• Making sure the drainage hole stays clear
• Preventing compost washing out
• Using the right gritty mix
• Choosing plants that actually like these conditions![]()
Get that wrong and even the nicest planting slowly declines.![]()
Get it right and it should thrive for years.![]()
I’ve put together a short email series explaining some of the most common garden mistakes I see at this time of year — and how to avoid them.![]()

Spring is when gardens quietly decide what they’re going to look like for the rest of the year.![]()
At this time of year I often see the same small things happening in established gardens:![]()
• Shrubs pruned slightly too hard
• Climbers not tied in while growth is still flexible
• Borders already starting to overcrowd
• Plants growing in directions that will become problems later![]()
None of it looks serious in March or April.![]()
But by June the structure of the garden is already set.![]()
This is why early spring is the most important moment to guide a garden properly.![]()
I’ve put together a short email series explaining some of the most common mistakes I see in gardens — and how to avoid them.![]()
